    Positive Praise First

    September 28th, 2016

    Positive Praise First

Over the course of these past four posts I’ve shared our school’s strategies for positively motivating children to do their best.

Grand Master Darren Norris, Owner of Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah, NC

In this newsletter, I want to discuss a common mistake that I’ve seen other teachers and parents sometimes make along the way. In their desire to help children do their very best, they offer “constructive criticism” right from the very beginning.

However, if children hear praise first, they are much more willing to keep improving. We train our instructors to seek the positives first, to be “good finders.” Once they praise our students for their efforts, they share ways to improve upon their technique.

So it sounds like this: “I like the way you kicked. Now if you turn your foot this would be better. Great! Now do it 10 more times just like that!”

Instead of being guarded and defensive, the child is motivated by the praise to try again.

I also see this with parents. They love their child and want them to do so well that they first correct their child instead of first praising them for their efforts. This minor tweak will really boost your child’s desire to be the best.

Our instructors call this, “Praise, Correct, Praise and Challenge.”

I hope this helps. To see my instructors in action, stop by our school and watch how well students respond to our successful style of teaching.

Thank you for visiting our page.

    Sincerely,
    Darren Norris

P.S. The very best way to see our LIFE LESSON strategies in action is for your child or family to experience them directly via our TRY US OUT program.

Positive Labeling with Martial Arts in Etowah

    June 26th, 2016

Last time I told you how we use POSITIVE SELF LABELING to

get the most out of the children in our classes.

In this newsletter, I want to describe:

Grand Master Darren Norris, Owner of Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah, NC

Strategy #3 — WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME

For example, our instructors might say,

“Who wants to get to the next level in martial arts?” (kids all raise their hand)

“Well, if you do, you are going to have to learn this new martial arts move and I will give you a sticker when you do.”

In other words, we let our children set a goal for themselves and then we tell them how and offer an award if they accomplish the goal set.

How can you apply this strategy? You might say to your child:

“Do you want good grades” (yep, your child says)

“Well, if you do, you should ask for extra credit at school. That will give you a better shot at good grades and you can get extra play time (or some other family incentive).

Just make sure your child knows WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM.

In this and the last two newsletters I’ve shared three strategies we use to get the most out of our children. I hope you have found this information valuable.

In the next newsletter I’m going to discuss how to help your child make the right choices in life.

Thank you for visiting our page.

    Sincerely,
    Darren Norris

Positive Self Labeling in Martial Arts Class

    June 1st, 2016

Last time I told you how we use POSITIVE LABELING as one our
strategies to get the most out of children in our classes.

Grand Master Darren Norris, Owner of Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah, NC

Our parents use this strategy also with great results.

Are you continuously looking for opportunities to POSITIVELY
    LABEL your child?

In this newsletter I want to tell you about the second of the
    three strategies we frequently use.

Strategy #2 is POSITIVE SELF LABELING

For example, we might ask the entire class:

”Who wants to be strong?” (kids all raise their hand)

“Who wants big muscles?” (kids all raise their hands).

“Who wants a super strong hand technique?” (kids raise their
    hands)

“Well if you want these things than you are going to have to
do push ups. Show me your ten best push ups.”

In other words, we let our children label themselves with a
goal and then we show them out to accomplish it.

How can you apply this strategy? You might say to your child:

“You want to be smart?” (yep, your child says) “You want good
grades?” (yep, your child says). “Then, getting all your homework
done is going to be very important.”

POSITIVE SELF LABELING — it works for us and it will work for
    you.

Thank you for visiting our page.

    Sincerely,
    Darren Norris

P.S. The very best way to see our LIFE LESSON strategies in action
is for your child or family to experience them directly via our
    TRY US OUT program.

The Truth About Martial Arts Schools

    April 24th, 2016

The Truth About Martial Arts Schools

Grand Master Darren Norris, Owner of Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah, NC

Do Government Agencies Protect You and Your Family From Unqualified Martial Arts Schools and Unlicensed Instructors? The Answer May Surprise You!

The Truth About Martial Arts Instructors Is A revealing report by Grand Master Darren Norris of Etowah, North Carolina.

As with school teachers, doctors, pilots, and any other profession, all Martial Arts Schools or Instructors are not created equal.

First of all, you have to remember that in the USA, Martial Arts are just that – AN ART FORM. Martial arts schools in the USA are not federally or state controlled as they are in Korea and Japan. North Carolina isn’t the only place that you will find unqualified instructors running schools. It is a national epidemic.

In Japan and Korea you can actually earn a college degree at a Martial Arts School. In the USA, there is no consumer watchdog agency to ensure the quality or legitimacy of Martial Arts instruction. There are no national standards, criteria or requirements for Martial Arts. Many people have abused this system and it is up to you, as a consumer, to try to find a good instructor.

So does that mean that if my Instructor is Korean or Japanese that he is qualified? NO, unfortunately the majority of those Korean and Japanese instructors in the USA came here as low ranking black belts to open a school because there were not licensed to do that in their country. You won’t have that problem if you attend our Aikido and Hapkido school in Etowah, North Carolina. All of our instructors are internationally certified.

Essentially anyone can open a Martial Arts school after obtaining a business license. I have seen schools run by 15 and 16 year old children. In Korea you must be at least 24 years old to test for an instructor’s license. In the USA people can order an impressive looking certificate from some mail order organization in any Martial Arts magazine.

Decent schools have instructors with a reasonable idea about what they are doing with their art and their teaching ability and at the same time also understand how to run the school as a business so they can pay the rent and keep the lights on.

That being said, what does that tell you about their martial art, their ability to teach what you are looking for and the actual benefits that you will receive from studying with them? Nothing much.

In other words, a “Reasonable Idea” about their ability to teach Martial Arts and the ability to keep the lights on: Is this the Criteria upon which to base your choice of Martial Arts School?

The best Martial Arts instructors are “Self-Regulated”. They seek out the proper training and certifications from the organizations for their Martial Art in the homeland country. For Korean Martial Arts schools that would mean belonging to the Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association or one of the branch member organizations.

First a few rules of thumb to consider:

You will encounter many “Masters and Grandmasters”. Their schools’ advertisements will tout their owners’ amazing achievements in Martial Arts competition or in rank achievement.

Many school owners will claim to be high-ranking black belts such as 6th degree black belt up through 10th degree black belt. Every Martial Arts style has a slightly different scale of belts or sashes and ranks. Don’t let this confuse, impress or intimidate you. Think of it as nothing more than someone who has gone through elementary school, then on to middle school, high school, college and possibly graduate school. However, in the USA nearly 99% of these ranks are self-appointed, NOT from the world headquarters in Korea.

Rank means nothing if the knowledge of the “Masters” cannot help you achieve your goals. All schools will claim to teach the standard fare: discipline, self-confidence, respect, etc. All schools will try to impress you with the qualifications and accomplishments of the owner or master. However, you will almost never be taught by that person, but by his or her junior instructors – often times you may be taught by an 18 year old who is a 1st degree black belt or sometimes even a brown belt. There is nothing inherently wrong with this as long as you do receive some instruction from higher ranking black belts that are certified instructors as you increase in rank over time.

Some schools will tout the fact that they belong to some national or international association or federation related to their Martial Arts style. This is not a bad thing, but it is not a guarantee that you will receive quality instruction or that there will be good focus on self-defense. Many of these organizations are mere sports organizations that do not teach a realistic self-defense system.

Most schools will try to fit you into what programs they have to offer. You want to try to pry more info out of them on how they will fit your needs and specifically how they will meet the claims that they make.

Finally, keep in mind that Martial Arts schools are not miracle factories. You will have to work hard and put a lot into it in order to get a lot out of it.

Positive Results from Martial Arts Training

    March 30th, 2016

Ever wish that your child would make the choice to do something

Grand Master Darren Norris, Owner of Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah, NC

harder than take the easy way out?

I repeatedly hear this concern from parents.

Well, after years of working with kids, we have developed some very successful strategies to get the very best out of children.

In this and the next two newsletters, I’ll describe three of these strategies.

The underlying goal with all of our LIFE LESSONS is to get children to develop the motivation from within to want to do the right thing.

    Strategy #1 is POSITIVE LABELING

For example, if we want our children to do good push ups our instructors might say:

“I know you are real strong! Can you show me 10 good push ups.”

In other words, we label the child the way we want them to perform.

How can you apply this strategy? You might say to your child:

“I know you like a real challenge and are smart, why don’t you ask for that extra credit work in school.”

POSITIVE LABELING — it helps us get the most out of our children and, if you aren’t already using this strategy, I’m sure it will help you.

Thank you for visiting our page.

    Sincerely,
    Darren Norris

Ten Reasons Why You Should Learn Martial Arts at our School

    December 2nd, 2015

Hapkido of Hendersonville’s, Five Rings Self Defense 125 Etowah Center Drive, Etowah, NC 28729 of Etowah North Carolina Serving The Brevard, Fletcher, Hendersonville And Horse Shoe North Carolina Community Since 1993 Ph: 828-388-0635 Call Today!

Ten Reasons Why Hapkido of Hendersonville’s Five Rings Self Defense Is The Best School For Your Family

    1. Our Staff: The Tang Soo Do and Hapkido instructors at our school are among the best in the world. They are highly skilled martial artists, and motivators who lead by example and teach with patience and enthusiasm. All of our teachers are licensed and certified by the world headquarters in Korea. They will take a personal interest and be committed to your child’s success.

    2. Our Teaching Methods: Watch any of our Taekwondo or Aikido classes and you will notice how we combine respectful discipline with a friendly hands-on approach. You will also notice the use of praise to provide positive motivation, explanations, and physical demonstrations to accommodate all learning styles.

    3. Our Curriculum: Designed by the world headquarters in Korea, our curriculum includes the most exciting and beneficial aspects of Taekwondo and Hapkido. These include kicking to improve flexibility, forms for balance, and partner drills to improve speed and reflexes. Your child will also be introduced to board breaking to increase confidence. Your child will experience cultural diversity learning some of the simple phrases of the Korean language giving them valuable skills for the future. Our students also get an opportunity to participate in our summer cultural exchange program working with student from Korea or traveling with our school to Korea for training.

    4. Our Class Structure: No two Taekwondo or Hapkido classes are exactly alike. A variety of drills are used to disguise repetition and keep your child interested while refining their skills at the same time.

    5. Our Students: Where else can you surround your child with a dedicated group of young people all working together to develop their physical, mental, and emotional strength? Training side by side with other children of their same level will not only develop your child’s cooperation skills but will encourage friendships that motivate them to attend Taekwondo and Hapkido classes regularly.

    6. Our Belt System: Traditional sports are limited in their ability to recognize a student’s increase in knowledge and ability. Our 10 different colored belts combine the best in short and long term motivation continuously rewarding your child for their progress and leading them towards a higher goal. This benefit of YuSool and Hapkido training is not available in any other youth or family activity.

    7. Our Special Events: In addition to standard Taekwondo and Hapkido classes we know kids need different events to look forward to. Every month, we run an extra event filled with fun and excitement. These include outdoor training, Costume parties, 24-hour camps, movie nights, demonstrations and more.

    8. Our Recognition Program: In addition to our belt rank system and daily praise, our Taekwondo and Hapkido programs offer your child opportunities to be recognized for their effort and accomplishment. These include student of the month awards, outstanding performance trophies, yearly honoree plaques and modeling opportunities in our public advertising and on the website.

    9. Our Family Program: As a member of our family program you can enhance the enjoyment your child gets out of the program, help them to understand and maintain the commitment they’ve made, and receive the benefits of our school for yourself. Our Self-Defense and Hapkido programs are safe and fun, easy to learn and a great way to bond with your family.

    10. Our Results: The strongest reason to make a commitment for your child is what they will gain from our Taekwondo and Hapkido classes. We offer training for a healthier body, a more focused mind and a more confident and disciplined spirit. Your decision to enroll your child is a commitment to developing your child’s abilities and providing for their individual needs. It isn’t just our trademark quality. It is our personal guarantee.

This isn’t just our opinion. It is the reason that every instructor in our organization has been nominated for, and inducted into, the “Action Radio Network and World Martial Arts Magazine Hall of Fame”. It is also why our school in the only martial arts school on the planet to be awarded the prestigious “School of the Year Award” from the Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association of Seoul, Korea 3 Times!

10 Things You Should Ask Before Joining A Martial Arts School
With so many schools to choose from how do you select the best school for your family?

    1. Are the instructors licensed by the world headquarters? In the US, martial arts are an unregulated industry. Less that 2% of the schools in this country have an instructor who is licensed by the world headquarters. Our instructors complete a 2 year internship program and have attended the instructors training course certified in Korea. All instructors must take an annual drug test, police background check, and be first aid certified.

    2. How many years teaching experience do the instructors have? All of our school managers are mature college graduates with a minimum of 10 years teaching experience. Our chief instructor is an 6th degree Grand Master and the highest ranking non-Korean in the state for our martial art style. Don’t settle for less!

    3. Do they teach effective self defense? The core of our program is traditional martial arts self defense skills that are currently used by the US Army, C.I.A., SWAT and the F.B.I. Our techniques have been proven by the world’s elite military and police units.

    4. Do they teach a martial art or a martial sport? We teach a martial art that trains your mind, body and spirit. Psychological studies have show that martial sports like sport Karate and MMA develop violent aggressive attitudes. Martial Arts teach self discipline, self defense and a positive attitude. That is what you want for your family.

    5. Are the instructors good role models, educated and professional? You will find that our instructors are healthy role models who hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, have excelled in other career areas. They act as mentors not just as instructors.

    6. Are the instructors recognized experts in the martial arts industry? Our instructors are often featured in leading martial arts magazines as writers, host martial arts radio shows, appear in martial arts television and movies. Not to mention that every school director in our organization is a martial arts hall of fame award winner.

    7. Has the school won any valid awards? We were the first school in America to be awarded the prestigious “School of the Year Award” from the Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association world headquarters in Korea. We are the only school in the world to have earned this award three times!

    8. Is the program tax deductible? We are a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. We are the only school in the area that meets the requirements for this distinction making our program 100% tax deductible. Don’t settle for less!

    9. How long has the school been in business? Our 1st school in the USA was founded in 1984. We are the official branch of the Dragon Martial Arts Academy in Korea, founded in 1955, giving us the longest martial arts school history in the USA.

    10. Do they offer a price guarantee? We offer options that give you a price guarantee for the length of your membership. Many schools don’t carry Insurance so they cannot offer a long term membership. They don’t have to guarantee your price or your safety.

    Sincerely,
    Grand Master Darren Norris

How to choose a martial arts school

Martial Arts Academies: How Do I Choose?

Learn the Criteria For Selecting a Martial Arts Academy

    ——————————————————————————–

Owner of Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah, NC

There are myriad styles of martial arts, Taekwondo, Sport Karate, Kung fu, Hapkido, Jujitsu, Aikido and Kumdo to name a few. Some have passed through the centuries, while others have been modified and are relatively new.

However, the style of martial arts should not be your primary criteria in selecting a martial arts school. Instead, you should consider what is emphasized in the martial arts program.

The Appropriate Martial Arts Emphasis for Children and Families

For children and families, martial arts instruction should primarily be focused on the personal-development aspects of martial arts and self-defense – rather than the sport fighting aspects.

All of the martial arts develop self esteem, self confidence, focus and concentration, self discipline, physical fitness and self defense skills. An emphasis on these benefits of martial arts is what you should look for rather than seeking out a specific style of martial arts based on the techniques used for kicks, punches and/or throws.

You should also consider how the martial arts programs are taught. The practice of martial arts is largely about the development of self esteem so you want to find a martial arts program where the instructors emphasize the effort as well as the result.

Self esteem comes from having real successes in doing something you care about. For many children and adults, martial arts can be an important activity that helps build self esteem but only if the martial arts instructors acknowledge, recognize and reward the efforts of the martial arts student as well as their accomplishments and successes.

To summarize – the most important two criteria in selecting a martial arts school should the level of emphasis on personal development and an approach towards teaching that is focused on building self esteem.

To evaluate a school against these two criteria, you should discuss them with the martial arts instructor and observe a class, paying particular attention to what is emphasized and how classes are taught.

Other Criteria To Consider in Choosing a Martial Arts Academy

    1. Curriculum

Is there a structured curriculum approved by the world headquarters for their martial art?
What are the opportunities for leadership? For Demonstration Team?

    2. Values

Many martial arts schools have a student creed that students must memorize. Does this creed agree with your personal values?
What is the school’s reputation in your community?

    3. More Class Considerations

While watching a class, observe the interaction between students and instructors very carefully. The atmosphere should be formal and professional, but the students should be having fun as well. Evaluate if the students seem happy and motivated. A good instructor can instruct 50 students with control and ease, but for an inexperienced instructor, 5 students might be too many.

    4. Martial Arts Instructors

What kind of training do the instructors have? Just because the instructor has a black belt does not mean he or she is a good instructor. The martial arts instructors at the school you select must be positive role models for the students and should be able to establish an immediate rapport with your child. They should be certified by an international governing body and attend continueing education courses.

    5. Martial Arts Facility and Safety Issues
The school should be welcoming and comfortable for both students and parents.

    Is the facility clean?
Is there a matted area where students can train?
Is there a viewing area for parents?

Selecting the right martial school will have a positive influence on your child’s development. We certainly hope you select Hapkido of Hendersonville’s Five Rings Self Defense in Etowah.
    Sincerely,
